According to a report from Fabrizio Romano, Mike Maignan’s (29) move from AC Milan to Chelsea is off, following a breakdown in negotiations between the Premier League side and their Serie A counterparts.
The France international had been keen to join the London club, with reports suggesting that the goalkeeper had given Milan an ultimatum by refusing to sign a contract extension: in effect, to either sell him now or risk losing him for free in twelve months at the end of his current deal.
This situation had created a conflict in how Chelsea and Milan valued the player. Chelsea believed that he was worth around €10 million, while the Italian club believed he should still be worth €30 million.
Romano writes that Chelsea further did not want to pay the ‘FIFA Club World Cup tax’ (meaning they did not want to pay an inflated price so that the player would be in their squad ahead of the upcoming competition), and are content to contest the revamped tournament with their current options.
