Chelsea’s move for Dynamo Moscow midfielder Arsen Zakharyan is dead for now but will be resurrected further down the line, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.
Thomas Tuchel has overseen a hectic few months of business at Stamford Bridge but plans may already be in place for the next two windows.
What happened with Zakharyan?
It was understood that Chelsea were ready to pay the 19-year-old’s £12.6 million buyout clause in order to bolster Tuchel’s midfield options on deadline day.
The player was reportedly set for his move to Stamford Bridge only for the transfer to be blocked due to the sanctions placed on Russia by the United Kingdom.
Zakharyan’s agent had previously claimed that a move to west London was close but later told Sport-Express that a deadline day deal was ‘impossible’.
According to the Evening Standard, however, Chelsea could make another move for the player in the January transfer window with the player keen on the switch.
What has Jones said on Zakharyan?
Jones understands that the midfielder still stands a chance of moving to Chelsea, going as far to say the deal will be resurrected.
The transfer insider understands that the Blues are desperate to win the race for his signature and are not prepared to let anyone beat them.
Jones told GIVEMESPORT: “Arsen Zakharyan is dead for now but will absolutely be resurrected – Chelsea really rate him and are adamant no one will beat them to signing him once it becomes easier to do so.”
Do Chelsea need the player?
Tuchel appeared determined to strengthen his midfield options before the deadline and eventually signed Juventus midfielder Denis Zakaria on a season-long loan after also missing out on Edson Alvarez.
But it means that the German now has plenty of options to choose from in the middle of the park. Alongside N’Golo Kante, Jorginho, Conor Gallagher, Mateo Kovacic and Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Zakaria’s arrival means Tuchel now has six options.
Given Chelsea’s system usually only calls for two central midfielders, that should be more than enough to steer them through the campaign.
However, both Jorginho and Kante have now entered the final 12 months of their contracts, so bringing someone like Zakharyan in to plan for the future may not be the worst idea in the world either.
The January transfer window looks set to be another busy one for the Blues.
