In a recent report, La Voix du Nord claimed that Chelsea are set to rival Atletico Madrid for Lens full-back Jonathan Clauss. It is understood that the Blues are hoping to secure the signature of the French talent during this summer transfer window.
Clauss’ Good Run Of Form At Estadio Bollaert-Delelis Last Season
The Strausborg-born sensation enjoyed a decent campaign with Lens as he put in a handful of impressive displays on the right side of their defence. Clauss participated in 40 matches for the French club last season, scoring five goals and picking up 11 assists on all fronts.
The 29-year-old has been a consistent performer in French football based on his average of 1.7 tackles, 2.0 interceptions, 1.1 clearances, 1.1 shots, 2.0 key passes, 2.1 crosses and 0.8 dribbles per game in Ligue 1. However, Clauss needs to work on improving his ball distribution after he made 73.3% of his attempted passes in top-flight football (stats via whoscored).
Is Clauss A Decent Option For Chelsea Boss Thomas Tuchel?
Clauss is a solid presence on the defensive end of the field as he can time his challenges well to secure the ball back for his team. He doesn’t mind clearing the danger when needed and can engineer a lot of meaningful opportunities for his teammates from the right flank. The four-time France international can even contribute by scoring the odd goal from time to time but needs to work on improving his link-up play in the opposition half.
Someone of Clauss’ skillet will be a decent option for the Blues as he will enhance the overall quality of Thomas Tuchel‘s match-day squad.
At 29, Clauss is currently playing at his prime and has what it takes to make an instant impact at Stamford Bridge if Tuchel can find a way to win the race for his services this summer. He will undeniably add some serious competition for Reece James at the West London club in the coming seasons. Hence, it makes sense for Chelsea to go all out in pursuit of the Lens star before the end of this summer transfer window.
