Chelsea to make summer move for Nico Williams

Chelsea are eyeing a summer move for Athletic Bilbao forward Nico Williams, according to The Telegraph.

The 21-year-old attacker is having a terrific season and has attracted the attention of many suitors. The Blues are one of them, having scouted him for some time now.

Williams, a Spanish international, has helped his side into the final of the Copa del Rey. Athletic Club are also pushing for a Champions League spot, sitting five points below Atletico Madrid in fourth.

Williams has three goals and six assists in 22 La Liga appearances this term. He has six goals and 11 assists in all competitions. He can play off the left and right wing comfortably.

Consequently, Chelsea and a host of other European clubs have him on their radar as they look to bolster their attacking line.

However, if Chelsea decide to pursue a move for Williams, it could have grave consequences for their current wingers, Raheem Sterling and Mykhailo Mudryk.

Sterling has been a disappointing signing since he joined the club in 2022. He has lacked the consistency to help the West Londoners push up the league table, and the club might be tempted to cut their losses this summer.

The former Manchester City star had offers from Saudi Arabia last summer but decided to stay in London. He might decide to move away if another winger comes through.

£88 million signing Mudryk has also not kicked on since joining the club. He has struggled for form and consistent game time. He could also be on the move if Chelsea can get their hands on Williams.

However, the pair are still Chelsea players, and there is no indication they will leave this summer.

Chelsea’s priority remains signing a striker, and they have Victor Osimhen and Benjamin Sesko atop their shortlist. It is still unclear which option they will go with as they look to strengthen their forward line.
