Chelsea’s negotiations with Palmeiras to loan Andrey Santos have hit a stumbling block, according to The Evening Standard.
Negotiations reportedly stalled over the length of the loan deal for the talented teenager.
The Blues want the player to return to them ahead of next season, but the Brazilian giants want to keep him until December 2023.
Chelsea are trying to loan Santos back to Brazil after failing to secure a work permit for the 18-year-old.
The club made two attempts to secure a work permit for him to play in England, but he missed out by one point both times. They were sure they could get him into the squad now, but it has not happened.
Chelsea hoped the former Vasco da Gama midfield engine could help with their midfield plight. The club needs a capable partner for record signing Enzo Fernandez.
Chelsea hoped Santos’ participation and performances at the South American Youth Football Championship would help him secure his permit.
He impressed at the tournament netting six goals to finish joint-top scorer with teammate Vitor Roque. His energy and drive in midfield were vital as Brazil won the title.
Furthermore, Santos received plaudits for his leadership qualities. He captained the Brazil under-20 team at the tournament.
However, he cannot play for Chelsea now and hopes his parent club and Palmeiras can agree on terms for the loan deal.
The player had personally chosen Palmeiras as his loan destination for their status and reputation for developing talents.
Both parties are discussing a €1.5million re-call clause. This clause would allow the Premier League club to have him back in June.
Santos will likely get his permit after playing for a club competing in the Brazilian top flight and Copa Libertadores.
Chelsea signed Santos from Serie B side Vasco da Gama this January after a breakout campaign. He netted eight goals and assisted four, announcing himself as one of his nation’s new wunderkinder.
Last month, the Blues paid £18 million to take him, but they must wait before using him.
