Chelsea move for 142-goal star ‘not ruled out’ at Stamford Bridge – GiveMeSport

Chelsea could still sign Cristiano Ronaldo because Thomas Tuchel desperately wants a goalscorer, according to journalist Simon Phillips.

The west London outfit have shown an interest in the 37-year-old already this window and Phillips reckons that Tuchel could still change his mind on the Portugal international.

What’s the latest news involving Ronaldo?

With Ronaldo’s Manchester United future in serious doubt, Chelsea owner Todd Boehly met with his agent Jorge Mendes earlier this summer to discuss a sensational switch to Stamford Bridge.

Ronaldo expressed his desire to leave Old Trafford following United’s failure to qualify for the Champions League and the American met with Mendes, with the striker signing for Chelsea on the agenda.

That came before The Athletic claimed that the Blues were ‘considering’ a move for the United ace, even though the Red Devils made it clear that he isn’t for sale.

The same outlet than reported later in July that Chelsea had withdrawn their interest in Ronaldo, with Boehly pushing the deal and Tuchel not overly keen.

But Chelsea are still yet to fill the void left by Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner, which has been highlighted in their slow start to the Premier League season, and Phillips reckons that a late push to sign Ronaldo isn’t completely off the cards.

What did Phillips say about Ronaldo?

He told GIVEMESPORT: “You can’t rule it out, purely because Tuchel wants a goalscorer and Ronaldo is certainly that guy.

“Boehly has always wanted Ronaldo, it’s always been pushed by Todd Boehly, but until now Tuchel has always said no. He could change his mind, depending on other circumstances and other targets.”

What are Chelsea’s current forward options?

In terms of genuine nine numbers, Armando Broja is Tuchel’s only recognised option in the squad, but he hasn’t started any of their three Premier League games and has in fact never been picked from the off for the capital club.

That leaves Tuchel with just Raheem Sterling and Kai Havertz as his main sources through the middle, which isn’t exactly inspiring considering some of the calibre of strikers Chelsea have had at their disposal over the years.

Havertz has done a decent job since becoming the central figure under Tuchel’s guidance last term, but he missed a golden opportunity against Tottenham last weekend and scored just eight top-flight goals last season.

Therefore, if Ronaldo, who has scored 142 goals for United, is keen on staying in the Premier League, it might be an avenue Chelsea want to explore before the window slams shut.
