Chelsea ‘make another bid’ for ‘world-class’ £70m star at Stamford Bridge

Chelsea have ‘gone back in’ for Leicester City defender Wesley Fofana as they look to bolster their defensive options, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The Blues are known to be in the market for reinforcements at centre-back following the departures of Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen to Real Madrid and Barcelona, respectively.

What is the latest news involving Chelsea?

A recent report from the Daily Mail has claimed that Chelsea have seen an opening offer of £60 million rejected by Leicester for Fofana.

It’s claimed that the Foxes hierarchy fear the west London outfit are prepared to go beyond the £80m mark, though, a world-record fee for a defender that they set when selling Harry Maguire to Manchester United.

And The Times then provided an update on Fofana’s situation, stating that Chelsea are currently considering an improved offer of £70m for the player Brendan Rodgers labelled “world-class”.

The France Under-21 international still has five years left to run on his current contract at the King Power Stadium, and given that he is only 21, it’s understandable why his valuation is so high.

Whether he is worth such an astronomical fee is up for debate, though, but Chelsea’s new owners have already proved that they are not afraid to spend big this summer.

What has Jones said about Fofana?

Chelsea have already snapped up one central defender in the shape of Kalidou Koulibaly and there is expected to be at least one further addition at the heart of defence.

And Jones has informed GiveMeSport that the capital club have already returned with another bid for Fofana, although not at the price Leicester are demanding.

He told GMS: “Chelsea have gone back in for Fofana but not at the £80m Leicester want. It’ll be interesting to see what gives here because Leicester have a reputation for holding out for full valuation.”

Who else could Chelsea sign?

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano revealed last month that Chelsea made a second attempt to sign RB Leipzig’s Josko Gvardiol by offering Timo Werner as a makeweight after their initial approach was rejected.

Journalist Simon Phillips then told GMS that the 20-year-old was Thomas Tuchel’s ‘priority’ following an outstanding campaign for the Bundesliga heavyweights.

However, Leipzig are reportedly determined to keep hold of Gvardiol, whose contract doesn’t expire until the summer of 2026, meaning he could also be a very tricky target to sign for Chelsea.
