Chelsea latest: Jamie Carragher spots Enzo Maresca ‘problem’ as Frank Lampard tipped for new job

A look at Chelsea headlines as club legend Frank Lampard is tipped for a new role and Enzo Maresca is told there is an issue with his squad

Chelsea will keep a close eye on their players who are away on international duty this week. Trevoh Chalobah is the latest name on that list after being named as one of two replacements for injured players in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad.

Chalobah has been a star performer for Enzo Maresca’s team this season. The 26-year-old will aim to add to his one England cap under the same manager who gave him his Chelsea debut in 2021.

Tuchel’s predecessor at Stamford Bridge, Frank Lampard has been earning praise for his work at Coventry City. The 47-year-old has led Coventry to the top of the Championship and Lampard has been backed to land a new job, should his success continue.

Meanwhile, Jamie Carragher has argued that Enzo Maresca has an issue in his Chelsea squad that is stopping the Blues from reaching the next level. Here, football.london looks at some of the headlines surrounding Chelsea.

Frank Lampard tipped for new role

Former Chelsea assistant coach Jody Morris believes Coventry City manager Frank Lampard could soon be in the running to be named the next England boss. Thomas Tuchel’s contract only runs until the end of the World Cup, and Morris thinks his former Chelsea teammate should be among the leading candidates for the role.

“Absolutely. When you look at the English managers that are out there, Eddie Howe is the outstanding candidate. He has been for the last five or six years. But then you can’t help but think about Lampard,” Morris told Metro via GeckoPlay Casino.

“The jobs he’s done at previous clubs already, he’s English, he’s bright. I think it’s something he’d be open to. He’s performed at [international] level and knows what it takes. He understands players really well.

“I think it’d be a great fit for the FA. If he’d want to do it after Tuchel, it depends how long he’s in the job for… I don’t know. If Lampard gets the success he looks like he’s en route to getting at Coventry, I’d imagine quite a few people would like his services.”

Enzo Maresca’s issue

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher believes Chelsea’s inability to settle on a consistent first-choice XI is preventing the club from reaching the next level. The former England defender has suggested that Enzo Maresca’s frequent team rotation indicates the squad lacks standout performers in crucial positions.

“I think the problem with Chelsea is, I think they obviously buy a lot of players. They’ve got a big squad, but a lot of the players are the same,” Carragher said on The Overlap. “It feels like every winger is the same when they swap them.

“So I think when you’re a manager, you’ve got the options and it’s not like one’s like a superstar and the other one’s just okay. So you’re always going to pick the main one. I feel like a lot of [Chelsea’s] players, there’s not that much difference.

“If you’re the front three, you could have a different front three and it wouldn’t completely change the level of the team.”
