Chelsea have made contact with Lyon about signing winger Malick Fofana, according to L’Equipe.
The Blues have spoken to the French club about a deal, but have yet to submit an offer.
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca expressed concerns about his limited attacking options ahead of the Club World Cup fixture against Los Angeles FC.
The Europa Conference League champions have only Tyrique George, Noni Madueke and Pedro Neto on the flank for the tournament in the United States after letting Jadon Sancho leave.
They recently failed with a transfer swoop for Borussia Dortmund attacker Jamie Bynoe-Gittens.
It is unclear if Chelsea want to sign Gittens and Fofana, but they are reportedly keen on signing the latter.
Fofana bagged 11 goals and six assists in 47 appearances for Lyon across all competitions this season.
He particularly caught the eye in the Europa League, dazzling against top-level opposition, including Manchester United.
His performances have attracted the interest of Chelsea and Liverpool. The Reds have their radar on him in case Luis Diaz leaves this summer.
Lyon paid €19.5 million to sign him from Gent, and suitors must be ready to meet their demands.
However, if Gittens and Fofana sign for Chelsea, their current crop of wingers would be under threat.
George, Madueke and Neto will want regular game time and could push for moves if their places are threatened.
