Chelsea have ‘already spoken’ to the agent of Mexico international Alexis Vega, according to journalist Simon Phillips.
The Blues are planning to back manager Graham Potter in his first transfer window in charge at Stamford Bridge, despite spending around £242m in the summer, as per Transfermarkt, and the Chivas de Guadalajara winger is in the manager’s sights.
Chelsea Transfer News – Alexis Vega
In his column for GIVEMESPORT, journalist Dean Jones outlined Chelsea as one of the clubs that would be tracking Vega at the World Cup, although they face stiff competition from some of Europe’s top sides, with Real Madrid and Liverpool in the offing, while Wolves have also expressed an interest.
As per ESPN, the Mexican’s father, Ernesto, stated that his son needs to leave his current club to pursue his dream of moving to Europe, with some talks already taking place, however nothing has yet materialised.
Guadalajara’s sporting director, Fernando Hierro, recently admitted that the future of his prized asset is not in his hands, and it will instead be a decision made by the player himself, as per Fox Sports, so it is looking likely a move to Europe may be on the cards in the near future, it is just a matter of where.
What has Phillips said about Vega?
It appears that Chelsea are one of the teams that have already initiated discussions with the 25-year-old, with Simon Phillips claiming that talks have commenced regarding one of the players on their ‘list’, telling GIVEMESPORT: “One player I have been told, who is also a winger and playing at the World Cup with Mexico, is Alexis Vega.
“We’ve had information come to us that he’s a player on Chelsea’s list of targets and we’ve actually already spoken to his agent as well, so that’s definitely one to keep an eye on.”
Could Vega’s price tag rise because of the World Cup?
While Mexico bowed out of the World Cup despite a spirited 2-1 victory against Saudi Arabia on Wednesday night, the team showed some good signs in their final match, although the Chelsea target performed better against Poland.
Hailed as “fantastic” by the aforementioned Hierro, as per Fox Sports, the winger was a threat, having more shots than any other Mexico player, as per SofaScore, and he was consistently involved in the attacking phase, but failed to make his chances pay, with the game finishing 0-0.
In truth, the 5 foot 6 playmaker was largely ineffectual in the other group games, brought off at half time by manager Gerarda Martino in his last outing, so his price tag is unlikely to rise courtesy of his displays in Qatar.
However, it is too harsh to judge the man who has 39 goals and 30 assists in 196 career games on three games alone, as per Transfermarkt, and he would be a very astute signing for Chelsea.
