Emre Can was praised by Germany coach Hansi Flick for his performance in Tuesday’s 2-3 loss to Belgium.
Can came on as a 32nd-minute substitute for Florian Wirtz and made an immediate impact, bringing defensive stability to a Germany side that had been overrun by the Belgians in the opening half hour.
“You have to say that Emre showed his defensive quality after coming on,” Flick told reporters after the game.
“He was, if you like, the aggressive leader we needed. He won a lot of tackles and shook up the team.
Can, 29, has emerged as a regular starter for Borussia Dortmund in the second half of the season and was rewarded for his good performances with a call-up to the Germany squad this month.
