The Champions League

Bundesliga Preview | Bayern Munich vs Freiburg: Julian Nagelsmann’s side face difficult test

On Sunday, Bayern Munich host Freiburg in a game that sees third play second. Bayern will want to try and maintain a consistent run of form while Freiburg will want to try and maintain their second position and potentially move into first if results go their way.

During midweek, Bayern travelled to Plzen to face Viktoria Plzen and won 4-2 which saw them qualify out of their Champions League group with two games to spare against Barcelona and Inter Milan. But last weekend, Bayern threw away a two-goal lead as they drew 2-2 with Borussia Dortmund. Having taken the lead through Leon Goretzka in the first half, Leroy Sané doubled the lead early in the second half. However, Youssoufa Moukoko scored first in the 74th minute before a late Anthony Modeste header rescued a point for Dortmund. This leaves Bayern having only won two games in their last seven games in the league a 7-0 win against Bochum and recently a 4-0 win at home to Bayer Leverkusen.

Freiburg have continued their good start to the season. Like Bayern, they qualified out of their group in the Europa League on Thursday as they beat Nantes 4-0 to leave them top of their group and currently unbeaten. In the league, Freiburg drew 2-2 with Hertha Berlin, they took the lead through Daniel-Kofi Kyereh in the 22nd minute before Dodi Lukebakio equalised with a penalty. Hertha would take the lead through Suat Serdar in the 61st minute before Kevin Schade equalised in the 78th minute. Freiburg have only lost one game this season which was a 3-1 loss at home to Dortmund in the second game of the season.

Bayern have shown their form in the Champions League but they have struggled as of late in the Bundesliga to be as consistent as they normally have. After a win against a poor Leverkusen side, it looked as if they may have found the form they had shown in the early parts of this season and this game against Freiburg will be a tough test for Bayern to try and re-find their form. Julian Nagelsmann has however been given a boost with the return of Jamal Musiala and Alphonso Davies, although they’ll be without Manuel Neuer.

The games last season saw Bayern win both. In the first meeting they beat Freiburg 2-1 at the Allianz Arena, before a more comfortable result in the Black Forest saw them win 4-1.
