Brest will face FC Shakhtar this Wednesday evening for matchday 7 of the Champions League. Due to the ongoing war in Ukraine, the game will take place in Germany, at Gelsenkirchen’s Veltins-Arena. For their first-ever European competition, Eric Roy’s Pirates are already qualified for the playoff rounds following a near-flawless league phase.
Brest won four out of their six Champions League games. The ninth-placed UCL team can still qualify directly for the RO16. Should they win tonight against FC Shakhtar, Brest will be certain to finish higher in the standings than Champions League winners Real Madrid, their final opponents next week.
With Jordan Amavi and Massadio Haïdara out injured and Luck Zogbé ineligible to play in the Champions League, Roy is likely to field winger Mathias Pereira Lage as a left-back. L’Equipe understands the Brest head coach is poised to replicate his 4-3-1-2 formation with which the Pirates beat Rennes last Saturday with Kamory Doumbia as the attacking midfielder.
