As reported by Sky Germany, Borussia Mönchengladbach are working on a deal to sign Julian Weigl from Benfica but are unable to meet SLB’s €15m valuation.
The Bundesliga side are ready to pay a fee in the single-digit million range and are continuing to pursue a deal. Contrary to earlier reports, Eintracht Frankfurt are not interested in signing the 26-year-old German defensive-midfielder, who moved to Benfica from Borussia Dortmund for €20m in January 2020.
Borussia Mönchengladbach are in the market for a central-midfielder but for an agreement to be reached, Benfica have to lower their asking price. Head coach Daniel Farke has Christoph Kramer, Florian Neuhaus and Kouadio Koné at his disposal but would like further competition for the trio.
During his 2.5 years in Portugal, Weigl has played 111 games across all competitions for Benfica, scoring and creating five, the German also has valuable Champions League experience, featuring 31 times in the competition.
