As reported by Kicker, Borussia Mönchengladbach are in talks to sign Julian Weigl on a permanent basis. The 27-year-old has spent the season on loan from Benfica and has a reported €15m buy option.
Weigl is under contract with the Portuguese side until 2024, meaning he will have 12 months remaining on his Benfica deal with his loan with Die Fohlen ends. However, Weigl has a preference to remain at Borussia Mönchengladbach beyond the summer, meaning the Bundesliga side may be able to negotiate a lower fee.
Weigl has impressed under Daniel Farke this season and has played 11 consecutive 90 minute games for Die Fohlen in the Bundesliga, his performances one reason BMG are three points off of a European spot.
Speaking in November, Weigl confirmed his desire to remain at Borussia Mönchengladbach beyond the summer whilst Sporting Director Roland Virkus labeled the signing of the former Borussia Dortmund player as a success story.
