Borussia Mönchengladbach remain livid over uncalled Serhou Guirassy foul in Borussia Dortmund loss

A major talking point emerging from this final Bundesliga weekend of the 2025 calendar year will surely be the fact that, despite the presence of VAR, Borussia Dortmund were falsely awarded an early goal in Friday night’s 2-0 win over Borussia Mönchengladbach. Gladbach midfielder Philipp Sander – responsible for marking Serhou Guirassy in the 10th-minute – was pulled down by the BVB striker in the box.

As a result, Joe Scally had to move in on Guirassy. Goal-scorer Julian Brandt was left unmarked. Brandt did supply an excellent finish. All appeared well until a Sky Germany camera caught the foul. The VAR team in Germany’s Kölner Keller may not have had access to the angle, or might have deemed that (since Guirassy wasn’t directly involved in the goal,) there was no reason to chalk the tally off.

Sander protested to match official Sven Jablonski to no avail afterwards.

The 1-0 was allowed to stand. 

“That foul is the reason the goal was scored,” Sander explained in his Sky interview afterwards. “I’m really not the kind of player who dives. For me, it’s a clear foul. When I run up to the referee like that, it really means something to me. I found accepting that decision difficult.”

“The first goal shouldn’t have counted,” BMG head coach Eugen Polanski added at the post match press conference. “But I just don’t want VAR at all. I don’t want to talk about it.”
