On Tuesday evening, Borussia Dortmund fell to their fifth successive away defeat as VfL Wolfsburg knocked Die Schwarzgelben out of the DFB-Pokal in the second round.
In what was a fairly end-to-end contest, both sides missed chances to win the tie before the 90 minutes came to an end, but a late strike from Jonas Wind in extra time ensured that it would be the hosts cementing their name in the third round.
Elimination from the DFB-Pokal also represented Dortmund’s fourth defeat in their previous five games, as question marks surrounding whether Şahin is the correct person to take BvB forward continue to mount.
However, speaking after the final whistle, Dortmund’s sporting director Sebastian Kehl insisted that this result will have “nothing” to do with Şahin’s future and that “we will stand together. We will go through this together.”
Recently, there have been concerns that Şahin is holding back this Dortmund squad, who, despite having a significant amount of quality, are being restricted due to their head coach’s tactical decisions.
With three games awaiting Dortmund before the next international break, it is expected that Şahin will need to turn the side’s fortunes around; otherwise, BvB may be forced into parting ways with the 36-year-old before it is too late to save their season.
