Boehly may be forced into behind-scenes change at Stamford Bridge

Chelsea manager Graham Potter is destined to come under scrutiny from the new owners if “bad form continues”, journalist Dean Jones has told GIVEMESPORT.

Despite taking charge of the Blues just four months ago, a string of poor results has seen the pressure surrounding Potter intensify rapidly.

Chelsea manager news – Graham Potter

Where has it all gone wrong for Potter at Chelsea? Despite arriving at Stamford Bridge amid much fanfare around a “10-year project”, just four months later, the pressure has already mounted on the ex-Brighton & Hove Albion manager. During the Blues’ latest defeat, as 4-0 hammering away at Manchester City in the FA Cup third round, Chelsea supporters could be heard singing the name of former manager Thomas Tuchel, suggesting their mind is already made up.

Of course, given the strugglers Potter has faced in his early days at Chelsea, it’s easy to forget it wasn’t all sunshine and roses under Tuchel. The cracks were beginning to show well before Tuchel was sacked in September 2022, with The Athletic reporting at the time, a wedge had been driven in between owner Todd Boehly and the departing German coach.

Having acquired Chelsea for £4.25 billion in May 2022, Boehly sanctioned a record-breaking summer transfer window, which saw the west Londoners welcome over £270 million worth of talent. Included in the spending spree were the likes of Marc Cucurella, Raheem Sterling and Wesley Fofana – all of whom cost in excess of £45 million each.

In total, nine new players were welcomed to Stamford Bridge by Boehly and Tuchel, before the latter was shown the door just days after the transfer window slammed shut. While it may have hinted towards dysfunctionality, there were suggestions that Boehly had already planned to get rid of Tuchel in view of appointing a long-term successor. But now, after one victory in eight outings and with the club languishing down in 10th, could Potter about to be sacked less than six months after taking charge?

What’s Jones said about Potter and Chelsea?

Speaking ahead of Chelsea’s Premier League clash with Fulham, journalist Jones told GMS that the pressure will already be mounting on Potter’s future.

“I know Chelsea set out on this long-term vision and insist they won’t be nudged off course with that.

“But that’s just not how football works. There’s no way if this bad form continues, they continue to get bullied by teams, while failing to show traits of encouragement, that Potter’s job doesn’t come under pressure.”

What next for Potter at Chelsea?

Every game from this point on feels like a must-win for Chelsea and Potter. With the fans already turning against him and the players failing to perform on the pitch, Potter can ill-afford any more slip-ups should he wish to stay in the Stamford Bridge hot seat.

Having faced reigning champions City twice in four days, losing both matches, Chelsea’s worrisome fixture list looks set to continue. The Blues will face west London rivals Fulham, who currently sit above them in the table, twice in three weeks while also coming up against Crystal Palace and Liverpool.

Given the approach adopted by Boehly while in charge of the LA Dodgers, his promise to commit to a long-term plan with Potter at the helm has to be taken at face value. But should the poor results continue, as was the case for many Chelsea managers that went before him, Potter’s stint at Stamford Bridge may be over before it’s truly begun.
