Gladbach sporting director Roland Virkus has confirmed that Ramy Bensebaini and Marcus Thuram will leave the club when their contracts expire this summer.
“We had an open exchange with both players and knew the current status. It’s a shame that they won’t be renewing their expiring contracts, because both have given us a lot in the last four years. And we also understand that our fans are disappointed that they won’t be staying,” Virkus is quoted as saying in an interview on the club’s website.
“But it has always been part of our strategy in recent years to bring in such talented players, develop them – and eventually let them go, because we can’t keep them forever. Ideally, these transfers generate an attractive transfer fee. Of course, it’s not good that that’s not the case now. But they are both players who can make a difference. Both of them have helped us in the past and are still helping us today. That’s why – despite all the legitimate disappointment – they deserve a proper send-off.”
The announcement comes a day after it was revealed that captain Lars Stindl will leave the club this summer.
