Bayern stunned as Weiser wizardry gives Bremen victory

Despite multiple injuries and suspensions, Ole Werner’s Bremen defeated Bayern 1-0 thanks to a fine Mitchell Weiser strike. Die Werderaner securing a first win over Bayern in 15 years.

Although Bayern bossed possession, it was Bremen who looked more potent in the opening half hour of play. Jens Stage raced clear in the 9th minute and lined up a shot that Neuer did well to stop. Bayern’s high line defending was given another scare when Bremen looked to have found the lead in the 25th minute. Once again, Njinmah hared through on goal and slotted past Neuer. VAR consultation would spot a foul on Musiala in the build-up, however.

Apart from Dayot Upamecano’s effort from an acute angle which was dealt with by Zetterer, Bayern looked rather blunt in attack. Despite a raft of injuries and suspensions, the visitors looked far more impressive with players like Stage, Woltemade, and Njinmah at the core of their hard work. Manuel Neuer’s spectacular save on Weiser’s deflected effort perhaps the highlight of the half.

While Kane fired over directly after the restart, Bayern found themselves trailing 1-0 just before the hour mark. What a goal and what a story it was. Former Bayern man, Mitchell Weiser, cut inside off the right flank past Davies and fired beyond Neuer to the roof of the net. Thomas Tuchel wasted no time in making a triple substitution which saw Goretzka, Mueller and Tel come in.

Die Rekordmeister pushed and pushed for an equaliser as the game wore on. Both Kane and Sane looked to restore parity with ten minutes to play but nether attacker troubled Zetterer. Choupo-Moting and Tel almost combined perfectly in the 87th minute as the Frenchman rose to head goalwards only to be denied by Zetterer and the post. Bremen held on for a memorable victory.
