At Bayern Munich’s pre-match press conference Director of Sport Max Eberl confirmed that Bayern will engage in talks with Thomas Müller over a new contract.
Müller’s contract at the Allianz Arena expires in the summer and it has previously been reported that this season could be his last as a professional and he will retire. However, no decision has been made yet and if Bayern will offer Müller a new contract, Eberl said:
“He’s an identification figure of FC Bayern and will remain so. He has experienced everything with this club. He’s extremely important to us. The talks with Thomas will certainly be very short. There will be no long negotiations. It’s just a question: ‘Hey do you still want to continue or you don’t? – and how are your plans looking like?’. But that’s still a long way off.”
The 35-year-old has mainly been used off of the bench this season but has had to be called upon at times due to injuries but when he has played he has struggled at times and has looked off the pace. However, Bayern are set to offer Manuel Neuer a new contract, who has also declined in form this season.
Earlier this campaign, Müller became Bayern’s record appearance holder, surpassing Sepp Maier. While in the summer, he was also a part of the Germany squad at EURO 2024 and retired from international football after the tournament.
Müller will likely be called upon once again this season due to eh absence of Jamal Musiala in Bayern’s opening game of 2025 against Borussia Mönchengladbach.
