Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich are the latest team to show interest in Chelsea midfielder Mateo Kovacic.
According to The Telegraph, the Bavarians could move for Kovacic this summer with only a year left on his contract with the Blues. Chelsea are stalling in talks with him.
Bayern hired former Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel days ago, and they could raid the Premier League club for the Croatian international.
Kovacic signed for Chelsea on loan in the 2018/19 season under Maurizio Sarri and struggled in advanced positions. New coach Frank Lampard came and asked the club to sign him permanently.
Chelsea signed him for around €45 million from Real Madrid, and he signed a five-year deal.
Lampard played the 28-year-old deeper, where he could use his elite dribbling and ball-carrying skills to get the ball into dangerous positions.
Kovacic’s performances helped him win Chelsea’s Player of the Year award in the 2019/20 season.
The former Inter Milan midfield dynamo grew in status in London under Tuchel and new coach Graham Potter. He captained the club in their last games before the international break.
He has been in good form for club and country after dealing with niggling injuries for most of last season and early this campaign.
However, Chelsea have not renewed the initial five-year deal he signed until 2024. He has only one year left on his contract this summer, and the club is delaying. This situation has alerted Manchester City.
The Pep Guardiola-led team is readying itself for the departure of Ilkay Gundogan this summer. They have their eyes on the rival midfielder.
Tuchel also likes the player and could get Bayern to come for him.
Although, Bayern might be worried by his profile. The Bundesliga champions are looking for a holding midfielder in the centre.
Kovacic is a ball carrier and not a sitting anchorman despite featuring there sometimes.
Furthermore, Chelsea should be wary about selling an established winner and superb technician like Kovacic. He is a vocal leader in the squad, a quality they have not had enough of recently.
Also, losing him to league rivals like Manchester City would be worse. They would have to watch him perform for the Cityzens weekly.
