According to Sky Germany, Bayer Leverkusen are targeting former Liverpool defender Joël Matip.
It is understood that the German champions view the 32-year-old as a possible replacement for the soon-to-be departing Jonathan Tah.
As well as this, Matip offers Leverkusen valuable experience at the top level, something the Werkself have been looking for after failing to convince Mats Hummels to join earlier this summer.
The former Cameroon international enjoyed a successful eight-year spell with Liverpool, winning six trophies during his time at Anfield, most notably the Premier League and Champions League. However, the Reds elected against renewing Matip’s contract, leaving him a free agent this summer.
Therefore, Matip is free to join the club of his choosing, and according to the report, Leverkusen have already made contact with the 32-year-old. It is believed that Matip is open to returning to Germany, having previously starred for Schalke in the Bundesliga.
Despite still boasting a plethora of options at centre-back—even if Tah is to leave this summer—Leverkusen’s reliance on a back three would mean that replacing Tah is vital. Should Die Werkself secure Matip’s signature, then Xabi Alonso’s side could see their backline improve upon their title-winning campaign.
