Bayer Leverkusen are now 49 games unbeaten across all competitions this season, a new European record. But not only that, Die Werkself have secured a place in a European cup final for the first time since 2002.
Xabi Alonso’s side fought back magnificently after finding themselves 2-0 down against AS Roma. An own goal from Roma’s Gianluca Mancini put Bayer 3-2 ahead on aggregate, and B04 would certainly have been happy with that given their qualification for a European final.
But this team just never gives up. Josip Stanisic equalised for Bayer on the night – 4-2 on aggregate – in the seventh minute of stoppage time to preserve their unbeaten run, which now stretches to 49 games.
With their first Bundesliga title already wrapped up, a historic treble is now on with a Europa League final against Italian side Atalanta, before they play 2. Bundesliga side Kaiserslautern in the DFB Pokal final.
