As reported by Catalan paper El Nacional, Barcelona have submitted an offer to Athletic Bilbao for Iñigo Martínez.
Throughout this transfer window Barcelona have been looking to strengthen their backline. Even though they have already secured Jules Koundé and Andreas Christensen, the club have also been considering to sign César Azpilicueta and Iñigo Martínez, as communicated in late July.
The offer is believed to be in the region of €15 million. However, the move is supposed to act more as a warning than anything else, as both clubs know that the Basque defender’s contract is set to expire in 2023.
Martínez’s buy-out clause is €80 million, which the Blaugrana are not willing nor are in the financial position to pay.
Renewal talks between Athletic Bilbao and Martínez have stalled as the 31-year-old does not want to renew his contract with the club.
If Martínez does not wish to extend his stay at San Mamés beyond 2023, Athletic Bilbao may wish to consider selling their defender before he leaves for free next year.
