Barcelona hopes dashed as Nico Williams renews with Athletic until 2035

Barcelona’s hopes of signing Nico Williams have been dashed after the winger agreed to a surprise contract extension with Athletic Club that runs until 2035.

The 22-year-old had been widely expected to join the Catalan giants this summer, with personal terms reportedly agreed and meetings held between his camp and Barca sporting director Deco.

A €62 million release clause was set to be triggered, with Williams keen to reunite with international teammate Lamine Yamal at the Camp Nou.

However, in a dramatic twist, Williams has chosen to remain in Bilbao, committing to what the club have described as a historic ten-year deal.

The extension sees his release clause rise by more than 50 percent, significantly increasing the cost of any potential transfer.

“When it comes to making decisions, for me, the most important thing is to listen to your heart,” said Williams in a video shared by the club. “I am where I want to be, with my people. This is my home.”

The news is a major blow to Barca, who had made Williams their top target as they looked to boost their attack ahead of next season.

Despite agreeing terms with the player, Barca were still wrestling with La Liga’s financial controls and may have struggled to register him under the league’s strict 1:1 spending rule.

Doubts over the club’s ability to comply with salary cap rules are believed to have unsettled Williams, especially after the league temporarily blocked the registration of Dani Olmo earlier this year.

Athletic have now ensured that one of Athletic’s prized assets stays at the club well beyond the expiry of his previous 2027 contract.

Williams’ decision to stay follows the recent renewals of several key figures at San Mamés, including Unai Simon and Oihan Sancet.

Since making his debut at 18, the winger has gone on to make 167 senior appearances, scoring 31 goals and helping the club return to the Champions League.

He also played a starring role in Spain’s Euro 2024 triumph, scoring in the final against England and earning MVP honours.

Athletic’s statement framed the renewal as a powerful show of loyalty, reflecting the club’s commitment to building success with homegrown talent.

For Barca, it is back to the drawing board. For Athletic, it is a triumphant moment — one that strengthens both their present and their future.
