Sandro Wagner will once again have to manage without his regular captain, Jeff Gouweleeuw, at FC Augsburg for the foreseeable future.
The Dutchman suffered a medial collateral ligament injury for the second time this season during Sunday’s match with VfB Stuttgart.
As the club announced and Sky Germany have since confirmed, the 34-year-old center-back will require surgery immediately.
Gouweleeuw made a 28-minute comeback against VfB after a long injury layoff before going to ground in pain.
He had already suffered a medial collateral ligament injury in his right knee during the home game against Mainz 05 in September.
Gouweleeuw subsequently missed six competitive matches after that fixture, and once again a return date is unclear.
