Augsburg goalkeeper Finn Dahmen’s pursuit of a Bundesliga record came to a controversial end on Saturday afternoon. Dahmen conceded for the first time in 684 minutes in a league fixture against Hoffenheim. Unfortunately, it came from the penalty spot. Controversy accompanied match official Tobias Reichel’s 70th-minute decision.
A Haris Tabakovic effort deflected off of FCA defender Chrislain Matsima’s foot, then struck FCA captain Jeffrey Gouweleeuw in the arm. Gouweleeuw vented to Sky Germany about the scene afterward. Augsburg head coach Jess Thorup naturally wasn’t pleased either.
“The ball is going away from goal. I’m moving. What should I do?” Gouweleeuw said. “I have the feeling that the referees themselves don’t know what constitutes a handball and and what doesn’t. I have no idea what’s going on in his [Reichel’s] head.”
“I can’t understand it,” Thorup added. “If he [Reichel] takes a look at this [after the match], he’ll 100 percent admit it’s not a penalty.”
Hoffenheim’s Andrej Kramaric converted the penalty that enabled Hoffenheim to notch a 1-1 draw.
