In a recent interview with Give Me Sport, journalist Dean Jones urged Aston Villa to move in for Liverpool midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain this summer. Jones said,
“He is a player of interest, but there are others they want to look at too in that situation. I think the really interesting thing about Oxlade-Chamberlain is he’s so adaptable in terms of where they could play him.
“Largely, you’d probably consider him a central midfielder at this point, but if you have any other issues in your midfield or in your team, he could go and do a job for you on the left or on the right, and he could do that job very well.
“The amount he would have learned technically at Liverpool would really help Gerrard, and he’ll have good reports on him too.”
Oxlade-Chamberlain’s Important Role In Jurgen Klopp’s Squad Last Season
Oxlade-Chamberlain played a sporadic role for the Reds in the previous campaign but still managed to put in a few eye-catching performances for them on the field. The 28-year-old found the back of the net three times and picked up three assists in 28 matches for the Merseyside giants last season across all competitions.
The England international played a vital role in Liverpool’s EFL Cup-winning run based on his average of 2.3 shots, 0.8 key passes and 2.5 dribbles per 90 minutes in the League Cup. He even distributed the ball well after making 81.1% of his attempted passes in that competition (stats via whoscored).
Should Aston Villa Boss Steven Gerrard Snap Oxlade-Chamberlain Up This Summer?
Oxlade-Chamberlain is a decent dribbler with the ball at his feet and can shoot the ball with power and precision from long range. He is proficient at creating a few decent chances for his teammates in the final third. However, the English sensation is in dire need of earning more playing opportunities if he wants to make the most out of the remainder of his playing career.
Aston Villa could be an ideal destination for Oxlade-Chamberlain as Steven Gerrard has the luxury of offering him regular playing time at Villa Park.
The 35-time England international is good enough to form a solid midfield partnership with John McGinn at the West Midlands club. Therefore, Gerrard would be wise to snap Oxlade-Chamberlain up in this off-season.
