Aston Villa are weighing up a potential move for Tottenham Hotspur forward Brennan Johnson ahead of the January transfer window, according to TEAMtalk.
The West Midlands club are believed to be exploring options to bolster Unai Emery’s attacking options next year and have identified Johnson as a potential addition.
Villa’s pursuit is likely to depend on Tottenham’s stance regarding the Welshman, as no decision has been made on his future at the club.
Johnson has made only six Premier League starts under Thomas Frank this term, scoring his only two goals in the opening two games of the campaign.
Villa Keeping Tabs on Brennan Johnson
According to TEAMtalk, Johnson is facing an uncertain future at Spurs ahead of January, as the club are exploring upgrades across the squad as part of their ambitious plans.
Should the Lilywhites show openness to selling the Welshman, Villa would be interested in a potential deal, having identified Johnson as a player who still boasts significant upside.
There is a sense that the 24-year-old could become available for a reasonable fee or on loan next month, when he will have less than two-and-a-half years remaining on his contract.
Johnson joined Tottenham from Nottingham Forest in September 2023 and has since made 102 appearances for the club, scoring 27 goals and providing 12 assists.
The ‘outstanding’ winger has yet to register a goal involvement for Spurs since the start of September, going goalless in his last 12 league appearances.
Johnson Could Replace Harvey Elliott
Villa could target a move for £125,000-a-week Johnson to replace struggling Harvey Elliott, who could see his loan deal cut short in January.
The 22-year-old has played just five times for Villa since arriving on loan from Liverpool in September and has not been included in the Premier League matchday squad on the last eight occasions.
As GIVEMESPORT reported previously, Villa are expected to hold talks with Liverpool over ending Elliott’s loan spell prematurely, while Unai Emery has also confirmed the Villans will not sign the London-born midfielder permanently after the season.
Hottest Team in the Premier League
Having won 10 of their last 11 games, Villa have undoubtedly been the hottest team in the Premier League over the past two months.
Emery’s side have already beaten title favourites Arsenal and Manchester City and have narrowed the gap on the pair to just one point, sitting third after 16 games.
