Aston Villa have initiated contact with Atletico Madrid over a loan deal for midfielder Conor Gallagher, according to The Times.
Gallagher moved to Atletico from Chelsea in 2024 and impressed in his debut campaign.
However, he has made only four La Liga starts and 15 substitute appearances this season. The 25-year-old is open to a Premier League return.
Atletico want a fee similar to the £35.8 million they paid to Chelsea for Gallagher and are reluctant to allow a straight loan.
Villa are pushing for a structure that delays the bulk of the financial outlay until next summer.
Tottenham Hotspur and other Premier League clubs are monitoring Gallagher’s situation. Villa are the front-runners after formalising their interest with Atletico.
Villa are bracing themselves for a busy winter transfer window as they strive to stay in contention to win the Premier League.
The Midlands club claimed a narrow 2-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday to secure safe passage into the fourth round of the FA Cup.
They face Everton in the Premier League on Sunday and will aim to continue their strong start to 2026.
