Arteta ‘drove move’ for £12m signing at Emirates

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta ‘drove the move’ to bring in midfielder Jorginho on deadline day from Chelsea, CBS Sports journalist Ben Jacobs has informed GIVEMESPORT.

The 31-year-old was one of three signings the Spaniard pulled off during the window, with Leandro Trossard and Jakub Kiwior also joining the club earlier in the month.

Arsenal Transfer News – Jorginho

On deadline day, Arsenal completed the signing of Italy international Jorginho from Chelsea, paying a fee in the region of £12 million to secure his signature, as reported by Sky Sports News.

Arsenal manager Arteta was very complimentary in his assessment of Jorginho in his latest press conference, stating: “[Jorginho] is a player I have always admired, a great character and someone who is going to bring leadership quality and in that position, he is going to help the team a lot.”

The Imbituba-born ace has signed on for 18 months at the Emirates, with the option of an extra year being retained by Arsenal.

What has Ben Jacobs said about Jorginho?

CBS Sports journalist Jacobs has let slip that Arsenal boss Arteta was a critical part of the negotiation process to bring Jorginho to North London.

Jacobs told GMS: “Mikel Arteta drove the move because he really likes Jorginho, he wants a bit more experience in that midfield, he wants somebody that can compete or come in as cover and Jorginho ultimately was the vice-captain at Chelsea and captained them for many games already this season.

So, you get leadership, you get a bit of composure, you get an old head, you get a good dressing room influence and you get a technical midfielder who can offer something from set pieces as well, which, ultimately, is a very shrewd signing for Arsenal in the context of where they are now.

Will Jorginho be a good addition for Arsenal?

Providing plenty of elite-level experience and a calm head on the ball, Jorginho looks like a signing that will fit Arsenal reasonably well and fit into their possession-orientated style of play.

In 2022/23, the 31-year-old has made 25 appearances in all competitions for Chelsea, netting three goals against Everton, Manchester United and AC Milan, as per Transfermarkt.

Bringing in a reliable alternative to the likes of Granit Xhaka and Partey to assume senior responsibility when in the side was an essential aim for Arsenal in January.

Jorginho has already shown his qualities in leadership in his time in England and never hides from receiving the ball in tight situations, which will be very useful moving forward in their title bid.

Either as a started or a squad depth option, Jorginho looks like a clever piece of business from Arsenal that could play an important part in their prospective future successes.
