Arsenal are set to finalise the signing of Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga by triggering his release clause, according to David Ornstein.
The Gunners are in the market for a new goalkeeper after Aaron Ramsdale was sold to Southampton last summer, while his replacement Neto’s loan deal from Bournemouth has now expired.
Mikel Arteta has moved to bring in a fellow Spaniard with Premier League experience in Kepa, who spent last season on loan with the Cherries himself and was a regular as they chased European football.
Arsenal Finalising Deal for Kepa
£5m clause to be triggered
Kepa is set to return to London this summer, and the Gunners are now set to finalise a deal to see him trade blue for red by triggering the £5m release clause in his contract at Stamford Bridge.
The 30-year-old Spain international, who was described as “world-class” by Mateo Kovacic, has already agreed to move to the Emirates Stadium, and plans to battle with fellow countryman David Raya for the number one jersey.
Arsenal had previously been eyeing a move for Espanyol shot-stopper Joan Garcia, who had a £25m release clause in his contract, but he has instead opted to join Barcelona which left Arteta looking for alternatives.
Raya is expected to begin the season as the number one, but Kepa has got plenty of experience in England and on the European stage which could see Arteta give him opportunities during the season.
Kepa joined Chelsea in 2018 for a world-record fee for a goalkeeper, but failed to live up to expectations and ultimately lost his place as a starter before leaving for regular football.
