Bayern Munich assistant coach Aaron Danks has praised Dayot Upamecano’s finishing ability after the French defender scored a remarkable opening goal during Sunday’s victory over SC Freiburg.
With Bayern under pressure in the opening exchanges, Upamecano blocked an effort from Niklas Beste on the edge of his own penalty area before racing the length of the pitch to finish a devastating counterattack.
The defender’s 16th-minute strike set Bayern on their way to a 3-1 victory at the Europa-Park Stadion, with Serge Gnabry and Michael Olise also finding the net.
Speaking to DAZN after the final whistle, Danks revealed that the coaching staff had recently revisited a similar attacking run made by Upamecano during Wednesday’s Champions League draw against Arsenal.
“We showed him his chance that he had against Arsenal again the other day, where he makes a similar run,” the Englishman explained.
“And I’ve just had a laugh and a joke with him in there.
“I thought he finished it really well. Like, he was almost trying to give the goalkeeper the eyes a little bit, look one way and finish the other.
“So yeah, it was fantastic. Really good finish.”
