Julian Alvarez spent two seasons at Manchester City before joining Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2024, but there has since been speculation over whether he could return to the Premier League
Former Arsenal midfielder Emmanuel Petit has suggested that ex‑Manchester City forward Julian Alvarez would complement Mikel Arteta’s attack and has urged the club to sign the Argentine. Alvarez has enjoyed his spell at Atletico Madrid, but speculation about his future has been growing ahead of the summer.
The 26‑year‑old has been linked with a return to the Premier League, with both Arsenal and Chelsea credited with an interest. In Spain, Barcelona are also tracking the striker, who could reportedly cost more than €100million (£86m).
However, the Gunners may hold an advantage in any negotiations, as their sporting director, Andrea Berta, was the one who oversaw Alvarez’s move from City to the Wanda Metropolitano in the summer of 2024.
Petit believes Arsenal should prioritise signing Alvarez this summer, insisting the 25‑year‑old has the attributes to thrive under Mikel Arteta.
Speaking to Ignition Casino, Petit said: “When Julian Alvarez was playing for City, I really liked him. He didn’t start every single game but every time he played for City, and for Atletico [Madrid] as well since, he has been really special.

“He can score goals and give assists, but he’s got temper, personality, and character. I think in terms of movement he is very intelligent. Physically as well, he’s a top player and technically, he’s got everything to suit the best clubs in Europe.
“The reason why he left City was because he wanted to play regular football, but I think Pep Guardiola would be very happy to have him back in the squad.”
Petit suggested the Gunners have a trump card to play, adding: “So definitely, if Arsenal have a chance to get him, with the connection with the Spanish players and the way they play up front, I think that would be great news for Arsenal.
“That would be a very, very good addition to the squad and a statement.”
Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has previously admitted he would welcome Álvarez back into his squad. The striker left the Etihad in search of regular game time.
“Maybe I’d love to have him… but I understand why he left,” Guardiola said back in October.
“Julian Alvarez is top. That’s why now he’s at one of the best clubs in the world, Atleti, playing for a top class manager, players, performing unbelievably.”
The Argentine has scored 12 goals and registered six assists in 34 appearances across all competitions.
