Germany U21 head coach Antonio Di Salvo has praised Augsburg forward Mergim Berisha upon earning his first call up to the Germany squad. The 24-year-old is one of four players Hansi Flick has called upon from the U21 squad.
“We brought Mergim on when he was still as Salzburg,” said Di Salvo. “He works very well with his back to goal, can shoot with his left and right and takes good free-kicks. You can see from his hit rate in the Bundesliga that he can prevail.”
Berisha joined Augsburg on loan with an option to buy from Fenerbahce and has 13 goal contributions (9 goals, 4 assists) in 20 games across all competitions. As reported earlier by Kicker, there’s a 95% chance that Augsburg activate their purchase agreement to sign Berisha on a permanent basis.
Kevin Schade (Brentford), Felix Nmecha (Wolfsburg), Josha Vagnoman (Stuttgart) and Malick Thiaw (AC Milan) have all been called up to Flick’s 24-man Germany squad to face Peru and Belgium.
One player that Germany will have to do without over the international break is Jamal Musiala, who withdrew from the squad after suffering a hamstring injury against Bayer Leverkusen.
