Antoine Griezmann no longer a starter for Didier Deschamps

Ahead of the Euros, Antoine Griezmann’s (33) name was one of the first on the teamsheet for the France national team. The forward who has since the 2022 World Cup, more frequently played as a midfielder for Les Bleus was a clear leader on the field for Didier Deschamps and appeared untouchable.

However, during the competition, Griezmann’s status in the team came under threat. The France team was struggling to find its feet in the competition despite reaching the semi-final and Griezmann’s role over the course of the tournament was reduced from a starter to a substitute

Deschamps was looking for solutions and it was clear that Griezmann had not done enough in his eyes to earn his place in either the forward line or the midfield. This situation has not changed and it is expected that the Atlético de Madrid star will not start tonight as France begins their Nations League campaign at home to Italy.

A warm relationship between former untouchable and manager

L’Équipe reports that Griezmann’s relationship with Deschamps has not suffered despite his new role. The vice-captain embraced the manager warmly when they met at Clairefontaine on Monday afternoon ahead of the first training session this week, and the two still talk privately ahead of each session.
