And still!
Alexander Volkanovski has scored some of the greatest victories in featherweight history, but it was perhaps his latest, on the 24th of October, he’ll remember for quite some time considering the age at which he scored it, at 38, and the undefeated status of the challenger, Movsar Evloev.
“He’s a legend,” Evloev said, disappointed in defeat.
For Volkanovski, it’s a chance to consider his future. It was one that, if the result and performance had been different, might have been his last. However, a brutal right hand on a bruised Evloev just before the end of the second round, which preceded a left hook and a decisive right, saw Evloev turn from the fight. Volkanovski took his time and found his ground-and-pound. It was not long before it was all over. And Volkanovski could stand proud, in the middle of the Octagon, jubilant in victory, hopeful of another big fight in the future.
“He’s a great fighter and undefeated for a reason,” Volkanovski said. “But I said I’m the fight guy for that job.”
“It feels good to get a finish,” he added. “I promised the missus a quick one so she wasn’t stressing on the sidelines. I knew there wasn’t long and just land that one big shot that hurt him. I found it, it rattled him a bit. Bomb.
“When he covered up like that, I knew the referee would stop it. To do what I’m choosing to do in this sport, if I don’t take much damage, maybe we keep going. So maybe we keep going.”
