Arsenal Goalkeeper Bernd Leno Close to Fulham Transfer

Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno is edging closer to joining Fulham, according to the Telegraph.

The Gunners initially demanded around £10 million for the 30-year-old but have reduced their asking price. Both sides are now close to an agreement for around £8m.

Leno was signed from Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen for £22.5 million in 2018. He emerged as a reliable figure between the sticks under Unai Emery.

He was also Mikel Arteta’s first choice until he was displaced by Aaron Ramsdale last season. The Germany international featured 125 times for the north London side, keeping 37 clean sheets. He now looks set to restart his Premier League career at Craven Cottage.

Fulham have made signing a new goalkeeper a priority this summer, and Leno has emerged as their preferred option.

With less than 12 months remaining on his contract, the Gunners can’t afford to play the long game. If they do not sanction a deal, Leno can sign a pre-contract to leave on a free transfer at the end of the calendar year. On that basis, the best solution would be to accept the proposal on the table.

The goalkeeper reportedly wants to stay in London, and a move to Fulham would guarantee that. He would also become one of the senior members of Marco Silva’s squad should the move be finalised.

Arsenal have already signed Matt Turner from New England Revolution. The United States goalkeeper will be Aaron Ramsdale’s deputy this season.

Following Turner’s arrival, the German would now be the third-choice shot-stopper at Arsenal behind Ramsdale and Turner. So there are no surprises that he is pushing for an exit.

Leno has aspirations of making Germany’s World Cup squad – something the promise of regular playing time with the west London side would help.

Fulham have been relegated in their previous two top-flight seasons. However, their survival hopes could be boosted this time with Leno in goal.

He would prove good value for money as he possesses significant Premier League experience, which could prove vital as Fulham target a top-flight stay this season.
