According to Foot Mercato, Bayern Munich now lead the race to appoint Xabi Alonso, with the Spanish manager thought to be concerned about the weight of succeeding Jürgen Klopp at Liverpool.
Alonso’s time at Bayer Leverkusen has rapidly seen the ex-Liverpool and Bayern player turn into one of the most sought-after coaching prospects in the world. Leverkusen remain undefeated across all competitions and could be on course for an unprecedented treble.
Bayern Munich slowly swaying Xabi Alonso
It was originally reported that Liverpool was the preference for his next club, with the inner turmoil at Bayern said to be off-putting to a manager carefully considering his following steps. However, Foot Mercato now report that the opposite is true and that the disappointments under Julian Nagelsmann and Thomas Tuchel provides Alonso with the opportunity to rebuild.
A feat he might achieve with some of the stars from his Leverkusen side, with Bayern particularly interested in stealing Jeremie Frimpong (23) from the current Bundesliga leaders.
