Despite the host’s savvy start, it was a familiar household name that one donned the BVB colours who struck first. Mario Götze, now of Frankfurt fame, made it 1-0. Omar Marmoush couldn’t beat Meyer in the one-on-one duel, but Götze devoured the rebound. Muted celebrations from the goal-scorer followed.

Terzić’s side continued to set the tone despite the visitors early lead. Parity was restored just after the half-hour period. Nico Schlotterbeck picked out Malen with a diagonal switch. The Dutch winger withstood Nkounkou while Karim Adeyemi fired home at the back post.

Although Meyer had to be alert to the dangers of Knauff and Dina-Ebimbe, Die Schwarzgelben held the lion’s share of possession and attacks after the break. Terzić replenished his midfield with the introduction of Nmecha and Bynoe-Gittens. Marmoush almost reestablished Die Adler’s lead with a powerful snapshot – Meyer remained brave and unwavering infront of the Egyptian.

Chances fell to Malen who dragged wide and Brandt followed that act swiftly. Tuta’s heroic intervention spared Trapp’s goal. But sustained yellow and black pressure eventually broke Frankfurt’s defensive dam. Brandt delivered the perfect freekick, and Hummels’ thumping header pierced the Hessen net. A late penalty conceded by Koch who snagged Bynoe-Gittens enabled Emre Can with the chance to seal a vital win in the hunt for the Champions League places.
