Bayern Munich coach Thomas Tuchel got some much-needed breathing space as his team crushed Lazio 3-0 on Tuesday night to advance to the quarterfinals of the Champions League.
But a toe injury sustained in the dressing room put a damper on an otherwise successful night for the Bayern coach, leaving him limping after the game.
“I kicked a box in the dressing room during the motivational speech and hurt my big toe. I don’t think I can take the shoe off. The team wondered why I was sitting for almost 90 minutes,” he said in a post-match interview.
Bayern CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen added that Tuchel’s toe was in fact broken.
“Thomas Tuchel broke his toe today during the pre-match speech – Thomas is on board with full enthusiasm and passion,” he said via @iMiaSanMia.
On the performance, Tuchel said:
“We were very disciplined. It was a very solid performance. We didn’t lose our heads. We were much braver and played better than in the first leg. The second goal came at the perfect time. We deserved to win with a very cohesive team performance.”
