Here’s a look at how Borussia Dortmund could line up for the 2022/23 season.
We’re not even halfway through July, but Borussia Dortmund seem to have done most of their transfer business already, at least in terms of arrivals.
The reported €60 million Borussia Dortmund received from Manchester City for Erling Haaland has been reinvested back into the squad, with Sebastien Haller, Karim Adeyemi, Nico Schlotterbeck, Salih Özcan, Niklas Süle, Marcel Lotka and Alexander Meyer arriving at Signal Iduna Park for a total of €86 million.
Dortmund are still said to be pursuing Hoffenheim’s David Raum, but they need to sell to be able to afford the left-back, with Manuel Akanji, Raphael Guerreiro and Nico Schulz among the players, who could be on their way out.
New Borussia Dortmund coach Edin Terzic played with four at the back when he was last in charge on an interim basis back in the 2020/21 season, and if he does that again, Mats Hummels will probably drop to the bench, with Niklas Süle and Nico Schlotterbeck expected to partner up in central defence.
Salih Özcan, Karim Adeyemi and Sebastien Haller should also come straight into the starting line-up, which could look like this as things stand:
Gregor Kobel
Thomas Meunier
Niklas Süle
Nico Schlotterbeck
Raphael Guerreiro
Salih Özcan
Jude Bellingham
Karim Adeyemi
Marco Reus
Giovanni Reyna
Sebastien Haller
Should Terzic opt to play with another centre-back (Mats Hummels) or central midfielder (Mahmoud Dahoud/Emre Can/Julian Brandt), it would likely be at the expense of Giovanni Reyna.
In addition, the U.S. international faces direct competition from Donyell Malen, who will look to show a different face after his disappointing first season at the club.
