Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (34) has become the top scorer in the history of the UEFA Europa League after scoring in Olympique de Marseille’s 3-1 victory over Shakhtar Donetsk.
The former Arsenal, Chelsea, Borussia Dortmund and Barcelona forward scored in the first leg of the encounter last week, which allowed him to draw level with the former top scorer in the European competition Radamel Falcao. Having drawn level with the prolific Colombian forward, Aubameyang has now become the outright top scorer with 31 goals.
The Gabonese striker holds the record for the most goals since the re-branding of the competition in 2009, however, Aubameyang must still beat Henrik Larsson’s record, which was registered in the UEFA Cup. The Swedish striker scored 31 goals in the competition, meaning that Aubameyang has now drawn level.
Aubameyang, who has scored goals in the Europa League with Lille OSC, Borussia Dortmund, Arsenal, Barcelona and now Marseille, will have the chance to add to his tally thanks to OM’s qualification for the next round. He is already the top scorer in this season’s edition with seven goals.
