Man United face competition for Mathys Tel

Manchester United have made contact towards signing Bayern Munich attacker Mathys Tel this summer, according to Florian Plettenberg.

Tel joined the Bundesliga champions from Ligue 1 side Rennes in 2022 for around €28.5 million after only a handful of appearances for the first team. He signed a five-year deal at the Allianz Arena.

The France youth international became Bayern’s youngest scorer in the Bundesliga and Champions League, establishing himself as a noteworthy talent.

However, the 18-year-old attacker has struggled for game time under manager Thomas Tuchel (only four starts all season), with the German coach demanding more consistency.

Tel is reportedly unhappy with his bit-part role for the club and is desperate for more game time. He wants to stay at Bayern but will reconsider his options if he does not feel the love.

According to the report, United are not alone in their pursuit of the Bayern sensation, who has six goals and three assists in only 18 appearances this season (Tel has the best non-penalty goal per 90 ratio in Europe’s top five leagues).

Tottenham Hotspur are likely one of the clubs in for Tel. They had asked Bayern about him in the summer transfer window when Harry Kane joined the Rekordmeister. They also reportedly considered a move for him in January.

Spurs would be a lovely landing spot for the Frenchman, fitting in nicely in Ange Postecoglou’s young side.

Tel would be a long-term replacement for Tottenham skipper Heung-min Son, who is entering the twilight of his career.

Tel, like Son, is an attacker who operates as a split forward, switching between the left flank and centre-forward roles.

Timo Werner has not impressed back in England since joining Tottenham on loan from RB Leipzig, and Spurs could turn to the Bayern youngster to replace him.

Brighton & Hove Albion have built a reputation as one of the best talent finders in Europe and could take the punt on him.

The Seagulls will likely not make Ansu Fati’s loan from Barcelona permanent, and Tel might be the perfect replacement.

At Brighton, he would get the chance to shine away from FC Hollywood with minimal pressure while forming a fearsome attack alongside Joao Pedro, Facundo Buonanotte, Julio Enciso, and Simon Adingra.
