Newcastle United was not able to secure Kalvin Phillips on a loan from Manchester City, as the former Leeds midfielder joined West Ham on a loan deal.
At the beginning of the transfer window, Phillips was a major transfer target for Newcastle United.
However, the Magpies’ interest in the player waned as a result of Man City’s demands for a loan fee, and West Ham United moved in to strike a deal.

“We had to step away from that one due to financial reasons,” Howe admitted. “I don’t want to go into too much detail but it was financial-related.”
West Ham will pay the full salary of Kalvin Phillips on top of hefty loan fee.
