Kalvin Phillips joins West Ham on loan from Man City

West Ham United have completed the signing of Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips on a six-month loan deal until the end of the season.

The England international has been surplus to requirements in Manchester since joining the club from Leeds United 18 months ago.

Phillips has been a mainstay on Pep Guardiola’s bench. His last appearance in the Premier League came against Bournemouth on November 4.

After a year in Manchester, he stayed on to slug it out, thinking he would fight his way back into the manager’s reckoning, but it has not happened, forcing him to seek game time elsewhere.

Phillips could find that game time under Hammers boss David Moyes. The Londoners have Edson Alvarez, James Ward-Prowse, and Tomas Soucek on their books but will be happy to have captured Phillips, who will add strength and depth to their centre.

Moyes will be delighted after getting his first signing of the transfer window through the door. The Hammers fended off competition from Newcastle United, Crystal Palace, and Everton to land Phillips’ signature.

“I’m really pleased to be here,” said the 28-year-old holding midfielder upon signing (via WHUFC’s website). “There’s always been a lot of speculation about me moving to West Ham, so I’m really excited to get going now.

“There’s so much to look forward to in the second half of the season for the Club, and I can’t wait to be part of it.

“There’s an unbelievable group here, and if I can come in and add the quality that I know I’m capable of. I’m sure we can give the West Ham fans plenty to be excited about between now and the end of the season.”

Following the signing of the Yorkshireman,  West Ham will turn their attention to securing a centre-forward before the close of the window after seeing their loan bid for Aston Villa’s Jhon Duran turned down.
