Henderson to use Ajax as stepping stone for Premier League return

Jordan Henderson has reached an agreement with his Saudi Pro League club Al-Ettifaq to terminate his three-year contract, according to David Ornstein. 

Henderson and Al-Ettifaq are finalising the contract termination, allowing him to leave for free just six months after he signed for them.

The England international is keen on a return to Europe with Ajax after a curious Saudi Arabian adventure that raised eyebrows.

Henderson struggled under Steven Gerrard at Al-Ettifaq, making 17 appearances and providing four assists.

He is now keen on a return to Europe after failing the Saudi Arabian challenge and is desperate to make amends at Ajax.

Interestingly, the 33-year-old could be using Ajax as a springboard back to the Premier League.

Henderson’s departure from Saudi Arabia follows a wave of high-profile transfers to the Gulf State. It was driven by the Saudi Arabian Ministry for Sport as they sought to elevate the profile of their league.

Henderson had defended his move to the Middle East, claiming he was looking for a new challenge, but will now return to European football with his tail between his legs.

Ajax have a famous reputation for developing and selling young talent, but their struggles this season warrant experience and leadership. The former Liverpool captain possesses those qualities in abundance.

At Ajax, he could help the Amsterdammers, who are currently fifth after a turbulent season marked by the exit of coach Maurice Steijn, to return to the upper echelon of the table.

Interim head coach John van ‘t Schip has led Ajax’s resurgence, and they will be desperate to garner more points as they aim for at least second place. Henderson will be eager to contribute towards their cause.
