Bayern set to sign Eric Dier after missing out on Dragusin

Bayern Munich have agreed a deal to sign Tottenham Hotspur defender Eric Dier permanently, according to Florian Plettenberg.

The 29-year-old will undergo his medical today ahead of a move to the Bavarian club for €4 million after being deemed surplus to requirement by Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou.

Postecoglou has used Dier sparingly this campaign after trying to ship him off over the summer. The Englishman has only made four Premier League appearances this term, starting one.

Tottenham have already lined up a replacement for Dier, with Romanian defender Radu Dragusin joining from Genoa for €30 million.

Interestingly, Bayern had tried to hijack the deal for Dragusin, but the young centre-back chose to honour his word to Tottenham.

Bayern came into the current campaign light at centre-back and right-back. They allowed Lucas Hernandez and Benjamin Pavard to leave and only signed Min-jae Kim. They also inexplicably allowed Josip Stanisic to go out on loan.

Dayot Upamecano and Kim have been the starting central defensive duo. Matthijs De Ligt played backup, but the Dutchman sustained a long-term injury that has forced the Rekordmeister back into the market.

Apart from the Dier deal, Bayern are still trying to sign another right-back and have their eyes on Paris Saint-Germain man Nordi Mukiele.

Mukiele knows the Bundesliga well from his time at RB Leipzig and should help bolster Thomas Tuchel’s options if they can get the deal over the line.

The final and most crucial area the Bundesliga side needs to address is their midfield.

They lack a defensive midfielder who specialises in breaking up opposition play – it is the primary weakness in their squad as there is no one to screen the defence.

They were close to signing Fulham’s Joao Palhinha over the summer to fill the role, but the deal broke down. 

There have been talks of revisiting the deal this winter window, but with no significant movement, Bayern fans can only continue to wish that the top brass can find a way to fill this gaping hole.
