FC Augsburg January 2023 signing Irvin Cardona has been loaned out to French side A.S. Saint Étienne. The 26-year-old will spend the second half of the current campaign in his native country under former Brest trainer Olivier Dall’Oglio. The six-month loan-arrangement does not contain a purchase option for the attacker who never managed to gain a foothold in German football. Cardona made just three brief relief appearances for the FCA this year.
Cardona made 10 league appearances last spring after joining the Fuggerstädter from Stade Brest. He scored his lone Bundesliga goal on his second Bundesliga deployment, a 45-minute-shift against Bayern on match-day 24. The former French youth international nevertheless never managed to crack the starting XI in his stay in Germany. To date, he has not made one Bundesliga start.
The loan to Saint-Étienne is a very good opportunity for Irvin to get regular playing time at an ambitious club and under his former coach,” Augsburg sporting director Marinko Jurendic noted in a statement published on the club’s website, “We are convinced that this loan is an optimal solution for all parties involved so that Irvin can return to FCA stronger in the summer.”
